Randa from The Everyday Domestic made over her glamorous vanity space by adding some Simplicity to her new desk.

I love makeup vanities. I think they’re stunning, stylish and necessary (especially for someone like me who hoards beauty supplies).

For the last few years I have been on the hunt for a vanity. My search was not as easy as what I thought it would be. Most of the vanities that I found had very little storage for make up and beauty supplies, and I have a LOT of beauty supplies to store. I found one vanity that would work, but the price tag was over $1000 – no thanks.

When I first came across this desk, I knew it would be perfect to turn into a vanity. I didn’t really have to do much to it; just clean it, paint it and change some hardware. I figured it would be an easy project, and it was. I would also like to add that these photos do not show just how orange this desk was. It was VERY orange.

The desk in itself wasn’t in bad shape, it was very dirty. (I didn’t get a photo of it at this stage, but I had to scrape off crud and other tacky, nasty stuff). Other than a few scratches, the only other thing was a little water stain from a coffee cup that was a few years old.

I used the color Simplicity. I wanted something clean and crisp for my vanity, and something to brighten up my bedroom.

The first coat covered really well, I thought for sure that I would have to do a few coats to cover the orange but two did just the trick!

There was no sanding involved in this project. That’s the beauty of chalk-based paint, it adheres to almost anything! I was a little concerned as there was some shine on this desk, but it still stuck like a charm. It’s been two months since this project has been completed and I have had no problems with it.

The finish is so smooth, you would never guess that I painted it.

I finished the piece with Country Chic Paint’s Natural Wax. There are no harmful chemicals or mineral solvents in it, and it protects your projects while giving it a stunning finish.

After a few finishing touches, my new vanity was ready.

I love my new vanity! I finally have a proper storage area for my beauty supplies and it’s no longer spread out all over my bedroom. My husband is pretty excited about the lack of clutter too.
