Sarah from Life on Virginia Street used Devotion, Sweet Pea, and Liquorice to create these fun plaid pillows!

While decorating for Christmas this year, I was craving plaid in all of my rooms. The only problem was that I had a limited supply of plaid fabric and pillows. Nothing a little paint and scrap fabric couldn’t fix!

I started out with with a scrap of white fabric that I knew would be wide enough to make two pillow fronts, and laid it out on a large cardboard box scrap I had. I then started randomly painting lines {with a foam brush} both horizontally and vertically with Devotion. Next I layered on lines with Liquorice and then followed with additional lines in Sweet Pea, all the while creating the look of a plaid pattern! I wasn’t looking for perfection as I wanted it to clearly appear to be painted fabric – almost like a watercolor effect, just a little more opaque.

The fabric dried relatively quickly, but I did let it set overnight before I sewed the pillows. I followed my tutorial for a throw pillow with a zipper and used a gorgeous red velvet on the back side of the plaid. My pillows are 20″x20″.

The painted plaid pillows are the perfect accessory for the holidays! I just love the watercolor-like effect I was able to achieve using Country Chic Paint!
