This elegant cocktail shelf was created by Kristy from Robb Restyle with Hurricane and gold wax! Click here to read all about how she did it.

Hi everyone! I’m back with another furniture makeover in my newly painted dining room.

This time our project was a trash-to-treasure makeover. My uncle rescued this old shelf from an abandoned building and knew it had potential. We thought so too!

First of all, I loved the beadboard-style of the main shelves. It was a perfect addition to our dining area because it had a narrow depth and fit the length of our wall nicely. Plus, the little cubbies were perfect for … beer glasses, goblets and wine bottles? You bet. Thus, a repurposed cocktail shelf was born.

The wood isn’t good quality, so this shelf really needed a paint job. The room needed some contrast, so I decided to pull out Country Chic Paint’s Hurricane for the job. It’s a beautifully deep-charcoal color.

We had just finished waxing the buffet (more details here) with Country Chic Paint’s gold wax… when we thought, what if we tried the wax on this shelf too? I had NO IDEA how much more glam the gold wax would turn out on a dark color. Really, I didn’t even expect it to show up much. I was so wrong.

The gold wax applied on Hurricane makes the entire piece look metallic. I thought my buffet was the star of the room, but this piece gets more compliments from visitors than anything else. The paint transformed this old shelf but the gold wax made it shine bright (like a diamond).

It’s funny, because my husband is the one who convinced me to try this gold wax. I often get him to help with my waxing projects… it can be a laborious process and he’s got more muscles. He also gets bored doing it. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how a gold wax would fit into my furniture painting style… but it really is a classy touch. It has a much bigger impact than I imagined. Score 1 for the hubby!
