This beautiful patina effect was created by Cait from Little City Farmhouse using Elegance topped with antiquing wax and gold wax! Read on to learn more about how she created this effect.

Hi there! It’s Cait from Little City Farmhouse and I am so excited to share this Library Ladder with you!

This was purposefully a multi-step piece to achieve a certain look. The ladder was originally a deep walnut colour. What I was wanting to create was a very old, natural patina.

This piece had some incredible texture to it, and I didn’t want to lose that by filling up that grain and those grooves with solid paint. Country Chic paint is so easy to mix to the consistency you want! I mixed about a half a cup of Elegance with water until it was the consistency a little thinner than heavy cream, and then gave the ladder only one coat of paint.

Then the fun! I sanded and distressed the piece well. I then waxed the whole thing with Antique Wax with a wax brush and then removed the top layer of the wax with a rag so that the dark wax was only left in the grooves and grain. Once that I was dry, I waxed the entire piece with Gold Wax, applying it heavily where patina would naturally build up.

You can see the difference the waxes make to create this look in the three steps – painted and sanded, antique wax, and then gold wax – here:

The Gold Wax can be used in so many ways! I have used it to create a little glam, and also to create natural patina paired with Antique Wax.

The result wax exactly what I wanted!

Cait {Little City Farmhouse}

Hello! I’m Cait! I am a wife and a mom of two little ones, and a proud auntie of a growing little flock! I first started by refinishing several pieces in my own home, and fell in love with it. Slowly it turned into a business and something I could do from home. I love the thrill of finding old furniture, and I adore the process of refinishing it into something new and fresh. Refinishing furniture is the heart of my business. I believe your home should reflect who you are, and I love helping people get the look they want in their homes by refinishing their furniture for them.
