Kathy from The Salvaged Boutique gave this outdated console cabinet a much-needed makeover with a custom mix of Vanilla Frosting and Fresh Mustard!

While shopping at a local consignment shop, one of the owners of the store pointed out this console cabinet and we both agreed it was a handsome piece, but a little color would make it more modern.

My sister, Karen (the other half of our guest blogger team) knows I have been fond of pieces of furniture painted in a rich mustard color; I’ve been gawking over a few Pinterest images for a while now.

So when I saw Country Chic Paint had a color called Fresh Mustard, I had to order it.

This console cabinet with it’s Mediterranean style and carved floral front was just calling for a bright color. I started by applying one coat of straight Fresh Mustard.

This was a good base for my next step: Color mixing. I wanted a more creamy texture so I mixed about 2/3 Fresh Mustard with 1/3 Vanilla Frosting (a soft ivory).

Country Chic Paint recently published a video about color mixing. Click here to watch Country Chic Paint owner, Rosanne, explains the difference between shades, tints and tones.

I applied two coats of the mixture with a paint brush. Sometimes we’ll use foam brushes for a smoother finish, but I knew I would eventually be using a dark wax so I used the paint brush. This allows the dark wax to settle into the brush strokes which in turns adds character to a painted piece.

Before the dark wax, I applied a coat of clear wax and buffed that out a bit. I lightly applied the dark wax making sure not to apply too much and then I buffed that out as well.

I chose to keep the inside of the cabinet in the original walnut toned wood.

This is a narrow, long cabinet with two doors and plenty of storage inside; ideal as a bar or to use as an entryway console table.

We took this console cabinet to our first appearance as vendors at The Cleveland Flea and I am happy to say that it SOLD!

I’m looking forward to my next CCP project already.
