Think of how wonderfully wood soaks up paint, it’s like wood and paint were made for each other. Have you ever painted terracotta? It’s almost like paint and terracotta were even MORE made for each other! Terracotta is a special material; it’s absorbent but also chalky, allowing for the most beautiful (and easy) distressed finishes.
For this project I used:

  • Terracotta Pots
  • Country Chic Chalk-Based Paint
  • Synthetic Bristle Brush
  • Sharpee
  • Cotton Swab
  • Sandpaper

I had these pots left over from a previous project. The pots have 2-3 layers of varying Country Chic Paint colors (Elegance, Backyard Picnic, Simplicity, Sweet Dreams). The best way to create an antiqued or vintage look on a terracotta pot is to apply paint with a dry brush technique. Simply dip your dry brush, lightly, into paint and applying with your desired pressure to determine coverage.

I dry brushed a fair layer of Country Chic Cheesecake paint , using a synthetic bristle paint brush, over the existing color. Allowing it to completely dry, I sanded through the Cheesecake topcoat to reveal the bottom colors and the clay pot itself. The paint and terracotta will sand very easily, it doesn’t require much pressure at all.

Lastly, I had my twins add a little bit of extra paint fun with a cotton swab (this was a Mother’s Day gift for their grandmother’s, and they are 1- super fun), lettered “grow” over the paint with a Sharpee and did a little more distressing, planted my plant and voila- super simple gift idea.

This photo shows some varying paint colors that were used, and the lettering prior to being sanded. I love how these pots turned out- easy and adorable.
Happy painting!

Jessica {Loveleigh Creative Soul}

Hello! I am Jessica Skinner, the hands and mind behind Loveleigh Creative Soul. I have been creating since I was teeny tiny, and must always have a project going. In a few words I am: twin mom, fireman wife, lover of the outdoors, surviving off of chocolate and DIY projects, trying to sweat as often as possible and am a total {health nut} foodie. Loveleigh Creative Soul is my 24/7 career along with being a somewhat new mom. Loveleigh is so much more than I had ever planned. I am guilty of filling my life to the brim with busy, but I crave the variety and never ending dream project lists that fill my mind daily. I have been an aspiring furniture builder for years and finally have been able to get a taste of that hobby with the help of my husband and father. I run a workshop based creative company in addition to Loveleigh, bringing DIY and skills to local Okies within three regions of Oklahoma. I am a Country Chic vendor and have been head over heels with the company since receiving my sample kit. I am honored to be among the painters who provide inspiring and helpful projects to readers like you! Enjoy
