This incredible bookshelf transformation in Eggnog was done by Michele from Shelstring. Come see the impressive before and after photos right here!

We’ve had these cheap particle board bookcases for around 10 years. I’ve never loved them. Not even liked them, but they’ve served their purpose and my honey was happy to have a place to put his books, so I managed tolerate them all this time.

But after repainting and making some changes to the family room where they reside, they no longer looked tolerable, I decided to remedy the eyesore, with my honey’s consent, by painting them. I was thrilled when I pulled out Country Chic Paint’s fall color Eggnog. It was the perfect color to go with the room.

First I popped out the backs and primed and painted the shelves.

(I recommend roughing them up first by sanding them. This is a step I did not take and wish I had.) We loved the transformation already.

I wanted to back them and was caught in a dilemma over this for awhile. I originally thought to add bead board, but after pricing them out and all the unexpected expenses I’d already put into the room, I decided free was better (hehe). So I snagged up a bunch of boards from a fence a family friend was getting rid of, and backed them.

Can’t get more free then that! 😉

I loved the color of the Eggnog with the fencing. It was absolutely beautiful. I would’ve stopped here, my husband and I loved them this way. The truth is, once the books were in them, you couldn’t see any of the wood, so I decided to frame outside the bookcases too.

It made a truly rustic statement.

Decorating them was a lot of fun.

For a huge project, it sure was a fun process!
