Angie from The Painted Piano is back today to share her incredible transformation of this piano into a beachy work of art in Ocean Breeze and white wax!

It’s no secret to those who know me that I have an affinity for any shade of turquoise. So when a client asked me to paint her piano turquoise, I jumped at the chance! I told her I had the perfect shade for her piano: Ocean Breeze.

She’s making a big cross-country move to Florida, and wanted her mother’s old piano to reflect her new beachy lifestyle. Ocean Breeze was not only the perfect soft turquoise to update her piano, but it has the perfect name!

I carefully took apart the piano as much as I could and then taped off the keys and insides to protect them from dust and paint. Then I sanded down the piano just enough to rough up the surface. I left all the dings and scrapes just as they were, because I think it reflects the age and character of old furniture!

After I got a coat of paint on the piano, I noticed a few spots where the old stain and water spots started showing through the paint. As soon as you notice this happening, STOP! Multiple coats of paint won’t fix the problem. I covered those surfaces with a coat of shellac, waited for it to dry, and applied another coat of paint.

After the paint dried, I used 320-grit sandpaper to distress the edges of the piano where it would naturally wear down over time. After that I applied white wax, making sure to do small sections at a time. I used an old wax brush so that I could really push the wax into all of the nooks and crannies in the piano, especially those imperfections I purposely didn’t fix earlier!

Once the wax was applied, I used a lint-free cloth to wipe it off the surface. It remained in all of the carvings, dents and brush strokes, really highlighting the piano’s character and giving the color depth.

Lastly, my client requested a mural on the piano! This was a first for me, but I was up to the challenge and I loved it! I waxed right over the mural, which gave it a breezy white-washed look. It was perfect!

I LOVE how the piano turned out. I think it’s going to be a great focal point in my client’s new Florida home!
