Hannah from The Cozy Hearth used Vanilla Frosting, Natural Wax, and a touch of Willow Antiquing Dust to give this pressback chair a soft, antique look!

I scored a set of vintage pressback chairs for $30 (GREAT deal, considering people can sell these for hundreds of dollars!?) A lot of vintage pressbacks don’t have cane seats, which is what makes them so special! They’re not used anymore, but they were popular in Europe in the 1600s/1700s. Only the wealthy were able to afford them! Isn’t that interesting? So these chairs were caned at one point, but they didn’t hold up well over the years, so the previous owners replaced the caning with leather seats. They might not be caned, but I sure do like them! The chairs still have a definite vintage look to them, after all.

After wiping down the chairs with a damp rag, I sanded the chair for an even surface. There were weird bumps in the finish, and I wanted to get rid of the irregularities before getting started. I applied two coats of Country Chic All-in-One Paint in Vanilla Frosting. By the way, all whites are not alike, and this shade of white is so dreamy! It’s the perfect balance between cool and warm. Cool white drives me nuts because it looks so unnatural! And get this, the paint didn’t have any weird fumes, so I was able to do all my painting indoors without ventilation, which was super convenient because I live in the Midwest and it’s still winter here!

After letting the paint dry, I distressed the wood with 150 grit sandpaper where the paint was uneven, and also in areas where I wanted a little more distressing. For a natural look, sand the areas that are most likely to get natural wear and tear. Think corners, edges, surfaces that are constantly rubbed. I ran my sandpaper over the carved design too, just to bring out the pretty details!

I used a slightly damp rag to wipe down the dust from sanding. Then I used a brush to apply a light coat of Country Chic Natural Wax. (This stuff strangely smells really good, like a bar of natural beeswax soap.) I sprinkled Country Chic Antiquing Dust in Willow in corners and areas where I wanted a little something extra, and let it sit for 30 min. Then I buffed out the wax with an old towel and that was it! I have to admit, I had a previously bad experience with furniture wax, where I applied too much, and I was scared to try using wax again, but if you do it right, you get such a silky smooth finish on your furniture, it’s amazing!

And here is the final chair! I love the color of the paint and the way the original stain peeks through it. It’s sturdy enough to use for seating purposes, but I think I want to use it as sort of an end table, and put a vase of flowers on the seat. Wouldn’t that be cute?
