Heidi from Lily Field Furniture gave this sentimental hope chest years of renewed beauty by simply adding a bit of Liquorice!

Cedar chests are such great candidates for makeovers! They usually hold sentimental value and an easy update keeps them useful and loved for years to come!

A neighbor recently approached me about painting her cedar chest. It was the typical dated, orange finish and had gold hardware plastered all along the front.

I started by removing all of the hardware and gold plates and then filling all of the holes left behind. After the hardware holes were filled and unnoticeable I gave the entire outside of the chest a good cleaning and sanding with 180 grit sandpaper. You can see it had a glossy finish and the sanding helps knock down the shine and allow for good paint adhesion.

For paint we went with my all time favorite black, Liquorice. It’s a classic, sophisticated color that will never get old for me! Once the paint was dry I sanded down all of the edges to show off the wood detailing and then applied my top coat.

I’m always amazed at what a difference a few hours and a little paint can make!
