Rustic Black Dining Table

Cait from Little City Farmhouse gave this dining table a beautiful new finish with Liquorice! Don’t you just love the look?

A customer came to me recently with her family dining table wanting a rustic but modern new look. Years of wear and tear on her table left the finish really worn so it was time for an update. She knew she wanted the table black and lightly distressed, so that’s just what I did!

I started by giving the table a good wash with a TSP solution. This is an important step! You don’t want any grease or oils on your piece otherwise you’ll have issues with adhesion. Then I sanded the entire piece with 150 grit sandpaper, making sure the areas with more wear previously were smooth with the rest of the surface. I then gave the table three light coats of Liquorice, a sophisticated true black.

When it was thoroughly dry, I sanded the edges lightly to distress them. The light distressing highlights the shape of the table while keeping bold and more contemporary look of a black table.

I finished the table off with several coats of poly in a satin finish, sanding with 320grit between coats.

What was once drab and dated has a rustic and modern new look! It’s always amazing to me what paint can do!

Hello! I’m Cait! I am a wife and a mom of two little ones, and a proud auntie of a growing little flock! I first started by refinishing several pieces in my own home, and fell in love with it. Slowly it turned into a business and something I could do from home. I love the thrill of finding old furniture, and I adore the process of refinishing it into something new and fresh. Refinishing furniture is the heart of my business. I believe your home should reflect who you are, and I love helping people get the look they want in their homes by refinishing their furniture for them.

  1. Hi Cait, That is just lovely. Thanks for the intro to “true-black” Licorice! I do love the lines of a lot of the old furniture too, but I don’t really like the heavy brown of the wood. I find it thrilling that these solid old pieces can be brought to live so beautifully by adding a little Country Chic… (and a lot of elbow grease! LOL!) What’s the colour of the lovely soft yellow piece in the background of the photo? That’s another beautiful piece of furniture.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Maia! Unfortunately I don’t know which color was used for the yellow piece, but you’re welcome to reach out to Cait on her blog for more details 🙂 If you’re looking for a similar color in the Country Chic Paint line, I think Creme Brulee would be closest.
