Textures and Layers

Angie from The Painted Piano used Liquorice and Texture Powder layered with Harmony and Cobblestone to give this buffet a truly unique, rustic finish!

Recreating a finish from a picture is a fun challenge for furniture painters, so when my client showed me how she wanted this buffet to look, I was excited! I hadn’t tried Country Chic Paint’s Texture Powder yet, and knew it was what I needed to achieve the look she wanted.

The buffet before, and the finish my client wanted:

I began by mixing the Texture Powder with Country Chic paint in Liquorice. Using an old brush, I dabbed the mixture on randomly and somewhat carelessly over the entire surface, making sure there were little “peaks” in the finish instead of flat surfaces.

Next I used Country Chic’s “Harmony” over random areas of the buffet as one of the layering colors. Finally, I coated the entire surface of the buffet with two layers of Cobblestone, my favorite Country Chic Paint gray!

Next I took a 220-grit sanding block and sanded the entire surface. Like magic, those peaks were sanded down, leaving a speckled surface full of gorgeous, textured layers.

Certain areas took a little more sanding to really smooth the texture powder, but it was well worth the effort. The finish looks rich and gives a whole new look to the buffet.

I topped the buffet with a coat of polyurethane, replaced the old pulls with glass knobs, and am so pleased with how it turned out. Thanks to Country Chic Paint’s easy to use products, this buffet got a gorgeous new makeover!

  1. I love the painted style on the buffet. I would like to try this on an end table which I bought from a neighborhood daily newsletter. I have at least one question now which is – Did you strip the buffet prior to starting the peak painting layers?? Thank you so very much. I just hope my turns out half as beautiful as your buffet

    1. Hi Ann,
I believe Angie just gave this piece a light scuff sanding to prep it, but I would recommend checking out our surface prep tutorial here to learn more about what to do for your specific piece.
