I immediately fell in love with the dainty lines and gentle curves of this antique secretary desk! With a little paint and some new knobs, I knew it would look fresh and clean.

No prep work is required to paint furniture with Country Chic Paint’s Furniture and Home Decor Paint. But I like to run sandpaper over the entire piece just to smooth the surface and give the paint a little something to grip, especially if it’s a shiny surface. Next I took out the original knobs and pulls and got to painting!

I thought a two-tone look would compliment the features on this sweet desk. I used a combination of Vanilla Frosting and Pebble Beach to achieve a sweet cottage feel for the desk. I taped off the parts the straight parts, and just used a steady hand around those curves and ovals.

On each of the tiny doors there was an intricate inlaid wood design. I used a wash over those, so that the design could be seen faintly through the paint. To achieve the washed look, I watered-down the Vanilla Frosting until it was fairly watery and just painted over the wood, wiping off any excess. I love that it helped to maintain the over all look of the piece, while preserving the beautiful detail!

It took two to three coats of paint to cover the dark wood. After it dried, I distressed the edges with 320-grit sandpaper, and then used 400-grit sandpaper over the entire surface to rid it of imperfections and make it smooth.

I replaced the old knobs and pulls with a combination of medium and small glass knobs. I absolutely love this transformation. It’s amazing how paint can change a piece and highlight its gorgeous features.

Chicken wire went in where the glass came out, the dated knobs were swapped out for glass knobs, and now it looks like a different piece of furniture!
