Come and read this post by Crystal from The Driftwood Home to learn how you can easily create a weathered, driftwood finish on your furniture with Hula Hoop and Vanilla Frosting!

Cribs are not projects I take on often, largely due to the fact that they are so tedious and time consuming. Most people prefer to buy new and just assemble for convenience. But when you get it for free, wouldn’t you rather spend the money making it everything you wanted?

My client had asked me to match this crib given to her to the Driftwood Changing Table we did with Vanilla Frosting. I knew it would be a bit difficult to get an exact match just because the woods are completely different but I knew that this crib would look incredible with the driftwood finish.

I started by sanding the crib to bare wood. It was difficult to get all the slat sides and bases, so I used Country Chic Paint in Hula Hoop to set a base for staining without having to take apart the crib to sand the slats. Then I watered down Hula Hoop with a 50/50 ratio of water to essentially make a stain. Once dry I went over it with a coat of dark walnut stain to tint the Hula Hoop wash.

After the wash and stain had dried for 24 hours, I now had to begin with blending. I made another wash with Vanilla Frosting and used a 2 inch chip brush to apply it in a grained pattern and quickly wiped away. This brought another level of depth and texture by creating grain and blending in more gray.

Then I used the chip brush to “dry brush” Vanilla Frosting onto the surface and create white grain and texture for a weathered/washed look. This technique isn’t complicated, but it takes layers upon layers to get the look you want. In my client’s case, she wanted weathered, nautical driftwood. I think this crib looks like it spend years in a beach house weathered by saltwater.

I love that there is a mix of browns, grays and whites and tie in to the nautical theme. Driftwood has many styles of finish, sometimes is more focused on the wood elements, and sometimes it’s more focused on the washed and weathered portions. Its so versatile and easy to create a unique and aged finish with a little elbow grease!
