Tammy Farkas: store owner and passionate furniture refurbisher

Her story…

Tammy is a wife and mother to three daughters. For the majority of her career she worked in advertising, marketing, and event planning but had always had a love of antiques from an early age with inspiration from her mother and grandmother. She began attending vintage pop-up markets a few years ago and found that more and more of her customers and fellow vendors were wishing she had a brick and mortar store front. This is what encouraged her to pitch the idea of opening a shop to her sister, Jana who was also getting tired of her corporate lifestyle and looking for a change.

Two and a half years of planning and remodeling later, the two sisters opened up a shop downtown on January 31st, 2017! Today, Jana runs the shop full-time and Tammy assists with management and business operations.

Her shop…

Tammy and Jana’s shop began as an old building which they spent nine months gutting and restoring to its original beauty. They carry a huge variety of old, new, and used items. With a variety of vendors with a multitude of styles, there’s something for everyone and this is what makes her shop a must-visit destination!

Her favorite thing about being a store owner is all of the unique finds. Seeing satisfied customers leave her shop who have found exactly what they’re looking for is what motivates her. She loves seeing what the dealers bring in to her shop. For example, at the moment they have a working circa 1950 water cooler!

Tammy became a Country Chic Paint retailer in December of 2016, just before her store opened. She tried several different paint lines before choosing which to carry and she loved the ease of use and low odor of Country Chic Paint. Her favorite color combination is Cheesecake with Chocolate Tart!

Her future plans…

T&J Mercantile is always looking to expand and improve. They would love to bring in a women’s clothing line and expand their selection of men’s products as well.

Tammy recently hired an event manager who hopes to start hosting workshops with Tammy and Jana very soon to teach you how to complete your own fun, DIY projects such as stenciled signs.
