Sandra from Charmed Crown Blog is here to show you how to mask the smell of antique furniture so you can make it look beautiful and modern once again!

I know many of you are probably thinking, “why on earth would you paint an antique in the first place?”. Sometimes you’re completely right. There are some pieces of furniture that are works of art and should be respected for their original beauty. However, sometimes there are other pieces that need a little TLC to repair and rejuvenate them.

This particular table was still very solid, but Sandra found that it had a strong, antique smell. You know the one that you just can’t get out of your nose after perusing a thrift store? After lots of cleaning, she found she just couldn’t get rid of it.

So…she decided to mask the smell by giving it a makeover with paint!

To start with, she gave the table top a scuff sanding to remove some of the shine.

Next, she knew she was going to have to use primer for two reasons:

  1. to prevent bleed through from the dark wood into the white paint, and
  2. to seal in all of the contaminants that were causing that old furniture smell

Once all of that prep work was done, Sandra was ready to paint! She chose our pure white color, Simplicity.

Last but not least, to seal in all her hard work and protect it from the daily wear and tear this table will receive, Sandra applied Tough Coat. It’s an extremely durable, satin finish top coat that makes your surface very easy to clean and it will hold up to heavy wear and tear!
