Michelle from Paper Doilies Crafts & Design gave this nightstand a modern look by adding embossed stripes and a bold pop of color! Come see how she did it.

By now, we have been inundated with one of the biggest home decor trends in 2019–big, bright color. From bold patterned wallpapers to purple velvet chairs to rugs hanging on walls, color is everywhere this year. And if you’re like me, who has loved the feel and look of modern farmhouse in white and grey hues, introducing a pop of color to my decor can be daunting.

Thankfully, we also see black matte furniture trending. I think the combination of the two brings whimsy and, dare I say, a bit of nostalgia to those of us who err to the side of softer hues.

Who’s to say we have to start installing wallpaper again? And drag our cushiony sofas to the curb to make room for a velvet settee? The great thing about not wanting to shy away from trends is we can always start small.

This nightstand now graces a somewhat drab, but still comfortable guest bedroom. Once upon a time it was “modern”, with its blond lacquer finish and straight lines, and later on was discarded, only to be found by me. I say every piece of furniture deserves a second chance. This piece doesn’t have much character. But it is functional and is made out of solid wood.

Since it’s missing that “wow” factor, I added stripes on the drawer by using Country Chic Paint’s Texture Powder, giving it interest and dimension. It is now one of a kind. I opted for a bright pink color for that POP! against the matte black. Black and pink? 80’s color trend, anyone? Didn’t I say this trend makes me feel nostalgic?

Supplies:

Directions:

1. Ensure your piece is clean, free of dust and dirt. I gave mine a quick wipe with just a wet rag, then dried.

2. Remove all hardware.

3. If your furniture has a finish, it is advisable to sand it so the paint adheres better. Use a power sander if you have one on hand. Wipe off dust.

3. I started with the inside shelf. This was just my preference. Use painter’s tape if necessary. With Cherry Blossom (or whichever bright color you prefer–Country Chic Paint has oodles to choose from!), paint the inside of the nightstand to add a pop of color.

4. Paint the body of the nightstand with Liquorice. Leave to dry.

5. While that’s drying, paint the drawer front the same color. Let dry.

6. Using your color choices, apply a second coat.

7. For the textured stripes:

A. Measure the length of the drawer front, and calculate the distance against the number and width of stripes desired. For example: my drawer was 22 1/2 inches long. The stripes are 7/8 inches wide (width of my painters tape). The distance between my stripes are 1 1/8 inches, leaving 1″ at one end of my drawer.

B. Mix an equal amount of texture powder to the amount of paint, using 1:1 ratio. If you find the mixture is too thin, add more powder. Add more paint if it’s too thick.

C. Using the painter’s tape to create stripes, apply the mixture of texture powder and paint with a palette knife. After a couple of minutes, slowly remove tape. Let dry.

D. Using light grit sandpaper, sand over the drawer front. This helps ensure the edges of the drawer stay smooth. I also sanded down some “peaks”.

8. Once all the paint is dry, including the drawer front, apply Natural Wax with a wax brush on all painted surfaces, then buff with a lint-free cloth until it no longer feels tacky.

9. *To create more depth with the textured stripes, apply black wax over the drawer front, buff with a cloth.

10. Replace the drawer pull, if not using the same one.

This look can be achieved with any bright color of your choosing. Voila! What once was frumpy is now fabulous.
