A client of mine dropped off several pieces to be refinished, one of them a two-tiered oak table that needed a lot of help. The top was warped and had huge cracks in it. Unfortunately it wasn’t glued and clamp job. Some people may pass over a table that has a situation like this, but it is easily repairable.

How to repair a cracked tabletop with Bondo:

I wish I would have gotten a better picture of the gaps – some of them were about a half centimeter wide and quite deep! I mixed up Bondo and made sure to really push it down into the gaps. After letting it dry thoroughly, I sanded it with my orbital sander (make sure you wear a respirator!). I sanded the top thoroughly to work down some of the wave from the warped wood as well.

Oak is a natural tannin bleeder, so after cleaning and sanding the entire piece, I gave it two coats of shellac based primer. I then painted it in two coats of Vanilla Frosting.

I distressed the edges lightly and gave it a coat of Natural Wax to seal it. This table came a long way!

The top of the table is filled and smooth and the wavy top is barely there and not noticeable at all!
