Cait from Little City Farmhouse created a soft, natural-looking distressed finish on this buffet painted in the color, Cut a Rug using fine-grit sandpaper. Come learn all about it!

Right before the start of summer I found this piece at a garage sale.  It is a vintage Henredon chest that is extremely well made and a pretty rare find for me here.  I loved the shape, the legs, and the bi-fold doors. I had initially planned on painting it navy, but it sat and sat in my shop because I just wasn’t completely feeling it.  When Country Chic released their new Lustrum Collection, I immediately knew what colour I wanted to use on it! Cut A Rug is a light grey with a beautiful smoky blue hue.  This is a colour that I’ll be using over and over for sure!
The colour was a warm wood tone and was in really good shape.  However, the colour wasn’t doing it justice! I cleaned it and sanded it lightly and applied two coats of Cut A Rug.  I usually spray my paint, but I decided to brush this one on using my Country Chic Oval Paint Brush because I didn’t want a perfectly smooth finish. I intentionally was going for a more worn over time appearance.

When it was dry, I sanded it well using 220 grit sandpaper to really give it a worn finish.  I didn’t put a lot of force on my sandpaper, instead I lightly sanded it until the paint looked worn instead of sharply distressed.

I finished it off with two coats of Tough Coat.  This piece would look great in a front entry way or a bedroom for extra storage, so I wanted to make sure it had a good durable and lasting topcoat!

Hello! I’m Cait! I am a wife and a mom of two little ones, and a proud auntie of a growing little flock! I first started by refinishing several pieces in my own home, and fell in love with it. Slowly it turned into a business and something I could do from home. I love the thrill of finding old furniture, and I adore the process of refinishing it into something new and fresh. Refinishing furniture is the heart of my business. I believe your home should reflect who you are, and I love helping people get the look they want in their homes by refinishing their furniture for them.
