This hutch survived years of different paint colors until Cait from Little City Farmhouse came along to clean it up and restore its original farmhouse charm with furniture paint in the color, Cheesecake as well as some Natural and Antiquing Furniture Wax!

I have a really sweet and fun customer that I’ve done several projects for.  The last one she brought me to refinish looked like this:

And halfway through it looked like this:

But in the end, it looked like this:

Let me tell you what I did!

I started by using paint stripper to remove all the old paint.  By all, I mean a good seven or eight different thick layers of all sorts of different colors! It took several sessions of paint stripper (and many, many, many hours) to get the paint down to a sandable surface.  It was definitely a labor of love!

Once it was a relatively smooth surface, I gave it a couple coats of Shellac to really seal in anything that might affect the final product.  Then I gave the piece a couple coats of Cheesecake, a beautifully creamy color.

When it was dry I distressed it well.  This piece, because of its age, was full of character.  We wanted to highlight that instead of try and mask it.  When it was done it still seemed flat and like it needed something more.  I wanted to antique wax it, but I didn’t want it to look dark and heavy.  I first gave it a coat of Natural Wax, followed up by dry brushing on Antiquing Wax.  Get a little bit of Antiquing Wax on your brush and just feather it on. Even it out & buff it to a finish with a rag.  The end result is a lightly antiqued finish that highlights all the character!

I am really proud of how far this piece came – and the best part is that it’s exactly what my customer wanted!

Cait {Little City Farmhouse}

Hello! I’m Cait! I am a wife and a mom of two little ones, and a proud auntie of a growing little flock! I first started by refinishing several pieces in my own home, and fell in love with it. Slowly it turned into a business and something I could do from home. I love the thrill of finding old furniture, and I adore the process of refinishing it into something new and fresh. Refinishing furniture is the heart of my business. I believe your home should reflect who you are, and I love helping people get the look they want in their homes by refinishing their furniture for them.
