Cait from Little City Farmhouse made an old oak dining set fresh and new again with the color Vanilla Frosting!

Dining room sets are a true labor of love, but my goodness they look completely different refinished!
This was a typical oak dining set that belonged to a customer of mine.  Her and her family were moving to a new home and wanted a new look.  She sent me some inspiration photos of what she was hoping for, and ultimately chose Vanilla Frosting (my favorite white!).

I prepped the table in my usual prep schedule:
  1. CLEAN – dining tables accumulate a huge amount of grease and grime that you don’t really realize was there until you start washing it! Use a good degreaser, clean several times and give it a rinse wipe down.
  2. SAND – if I am doing a painted finish (like this one) I give it a light sanding to give the furniture a little tooth for the paint to grip to.
  3. CLEAN – all that dust needs to be cleaned off! I vacuum and then give it a wipe down with a damp cloth and let it fully dry.
  4. PRIME – oak is notorious for bleed through, and if you’re doing a white finish you definitely must prime! Use a primer that is made for sealing in wood tannins, like BIN or straight Shellac.
Once my prep was finished, I sprayed the entire set with Vanilla Frosting.  I gave this particular set 3 light coats.
When it was fully dry, I sanded it smooth and distressed it in places it would naturally wear.  I gave it several coats of water based poly to seal it.

Dining sets are definitely labor intensive and take time to refinish, but they’re always worth it in the end!

Cait {Little City Farmhouse}

Hello! I’m Cait! I am a wife and a mom of two little ones, and a proud auntie of a growing little flock! I first started by refinishing several pieces in my own home, and fell in love with it. Slowly it turned into a business and something I could do from home. I love the thrill of finding old furniture, and I adore the process of refinishing it into something new and fresh. Refinishing furniture is the heart of my business. I believe your home should reflect who you are, and I love helping people get the look they want in their homes by refinishing their furniture for them.
