Giving a Small Piece of Furniture Big Character with Bright Red Furniture Paint

This little side table needed a bold new look to help it stand out. Elizabeth from The Lavender Homefront chose this bright red paint color called Devotion, along with some grey Furniture Glaze. Keep reading to learn all about how she did it!

Country Chic Paint’s “Devotion” was a color I had wanted to try out for a while. It’s so bright and not something I would normally pick for myself, but I purposely wanted to paint something out of my comfort zone.

Bringing This Side Table Back to Life Using Devotion

This beat-up, side table was on sale at Goodwill for the high price of $20, and I knew that it would look striking in Devotion. It was scratched and abused, but I knew the bright color would bring this piece back to life and give it the flare it needed. Because it was such a small piece, it needed a bright color to really give it the attention it deserved.

How I Prepped This Piece

The first thing I did, as with any project, was use a mild soap and water mix to clean the side table of any dirt, oils or debris. The little table needed a good cleaning, and I noticed that there were a lot of loose pieces that would need mending.

My next step was to use wood glue to piece parts of the table back together. The very back of the table was loose and the drawer was about the fall apart. I added glue and allowed it to dry so that the little table would be stabilized.

The table needed to be sanded as well to ensure the chalk-style paint would adhere. I lightly sanded the entire piece with a 180-grit sanding brick until it was slightly rough and I was sure the paint would go on well. It had an oil-based finish, so this was a must if I wanted to make sure that the water-based paint I was about to apply didn’t slough off.

Painting the Piece

I applied the first coat of Country Chic Paint’s red color called Devotion using a oval paint brush for the large areas, and a 1 ½ inch short handled brush for the spindles and hard to reach areas. As always, the first coat had a good amount of brush strokes and streaks.

The second coat of paint was done with a mixture of Country Chic Paint’s Liquorice and Devotion. I did a mix of 2 parts Devotion and 1 part Liquorice. The final color, once mixed, was a dark red. I wanted to layer colors on this piece to add some visual interest. I also wanted there to be multiple colors showing in the final product.

The last coat of paint was a thinned coat of devotion. I thinned it out using a touch of warm water. I wanted to make sure that the darker color was showing through a bit, and that the last coat went on smoothly with no clumping or heavy brush marks.

Using Furniture Glaze

The next step was to apply a grey tinted glaze, which I used to fill in nicks and scratches in the wood. I used Country Chic Paint’s Slate Glaze to bring out those imperfections and add extra dimension to the piece. To use the glaze, apply it onto the painted piece with a brush, and wipe away the excess with a damp lint-free cloth.

I have never used any of Country Chic Paint’s glazes and I really enjoyed using the Slate color. The glaze was easy to apply and wiped off with no issues, leaving some color throughout the piece. The side table sat for 24 hours to dry before sealing, and left a beautiful metallic grey hue to the red.

Sealing the Piece

After the side table had dried completely, I sealed the piece with Clear Coat. I applied two solid coats, which left the table with a nice sheen. With all its imperfections, the little side table is striking and a fun piece to have in my house.

Before I even listed it, the side table was sold to a friend who saw it and fell in love. I really enjoyed using Devotion, even though I would normally not have chosen a color so out of my comfort zone!
